After having to travel for the first three rounds of the Cup this season, the draw determined that a further trip was required to meet Forfarshire in the semi-final on Sunday. Despite three straight league victories, the prospect of meeting a Forfarshire side sitting in second place in the league was likely to provide a challenging test. And so it was to prove.
Mike Carson won the toss and elected to bat. He opened with Oli Hairs who proceeded to take 13 runs off the first over from Aman Bailwal who played for the 1st XI in 2017. Two overs later Oli struck three successive boundaries but was then caught for 26. Wickets fell in each of the next two overs before a period of consolidation by Mike and Jacob Onyekwelu, at which point the former was adjudged to have edged a ball to the wicket-keeper. The total at that stage was 36 for 4 in the 11th over. After Harry Shivmangal was bowled, Jacob and the returning Lachlan Hillis added 37 for the 6th wicket. Jacob was dismissed for a patient 24 with the score on 91. Lachlan lost another couple of partners before he was run out for 28 at 109 and the innings closed after only 29.2 overs of the scheduled 50 with only 119 on the board. With only three batsmen reaching double figures, the side was dismissed for its lowest total of the season.
Lachlan and Josh Stinson, also returning after missing a number of games, opened the bowling. However, the Forfarshire batsmen were largely untroubled despite losing wickets at 21, 54 and 59 within the first 10 overs. From that point the remaining 61 runs required for victory - and a place in the Cup final - were scored in only six overs thanks, principally, to internationalist Michael Leask who struck an undefeated 44 in only 19 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes to see Forfarshire home.
And so another good cup run was brought to a disappointing end at the penultimate stage.
