Mid-season Review

Statistics and More Milestones

The 1st XI has completed the first half of the East Premier League season with a record of: Played 9, Won 4, Lost 5 to sit in equal 5th place in the table with Carlton. In the Scottish Cup a successful run to the semi-final was, eventually, brought to an end with a narrow defeat by two wickets at the hands of reigning cup-holders Clydesdale. The Masterton Trophy was used as an opportunity to introduce a number of younger players to 1st XI cricket, the outcome of which was one win from the four games played.

In overall terms, then, of the 18 games played 8 have been won and 10 lost.

Leading performers to date have been Oli Hairs (810 runs and 17 wickets), Ollie Pilllinger (710 runs and 14 dismissals) and Donovan Du Randt (576 runs and 30 wickets). Other leading run-scorers are Mike Carson (323), Tiaan Kuhn (279) and Tom Wylie (264), while skipper Garth Weatherall (20), Tiaan (16) and Tom (13) are the others who have taken more than 10 wickets.

Centuries have been recorded by Oli Hairs (2), Mike Carson, Donovan Du Randt and Ollie Pillinger. In addition, Donovan has passed 1,000 runs and 50 wickets, while Tom has also passed 1,000 runs since the start of the season

It would be remiss not to pay tribute to the contribution made by Mike Carson whose final appearance for the club was in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Titwood as Mike and his family are relocating to the south of England. Including a few matches in the 2nd XI early in his time with the club, Mike played in 204 games, recorded 6,932 runs - with 15 centuries (equalling the club record) - and took 80 wickets and held 78 catches. He is 8th in the all-time list of leading run-scorers in the 1st XI and shares the club record partnership of 378 with George Munsey. In addition, he captained the 1st XI in 2019-20 and 2022-23 and masterminded organisation of the cricket week held to mark the club’s 150th anniversary season in 2025. He will be much missed and leaves with the club’s thanks and gratitude for everything he has contributed over the last 12 years.

The league season for the sides featuring in the East of Scotland Cricket League (ESCA) commenced a week earlier than the 1st XI’s and, consequently, are now into the second half of their seasons.

Under the leadership of Dan Kirk in ESCA Division 1, the 2nd XI has now played 15 games, including participating in the interestingly named “Braw Skelp” Cup for the first time. Results to date are: Played 15, Won 7, Lost 7, with 1 abandoned. Three of the defeats have been by 10 runs or less! The side is currently in 5th place in the league (5 wins and 5 defeats) and is looking to progress in the Braw Skelp with 2 wins from 4 completed games to date.

Leading from the front, Dan already has 386 runs and 12 dismissals to his credit, while George Baltzer (199), Alex Turner (166), Ben Jones (161) and Rory High (153) have been the other principal run-scorers. Of the bowlers, Abid Shinwari leads with 21 wickets (including a hat-trick) - Rory High (16) and Oli Robertson (11) being the only others to exceed 10 wickets.

In ESCA Division 5, the 3rd XI has probably surprised everyone - including themselves! - as, of the 11 games played to date, all but one have been won and the side sits clear at the top of the league table under the captaincy of Jaideep Singh. Not since 1979 has the side recorded eight successive victories.

Sukhrajveer Singh leads the run-scorers with 307, including half-centuries in three successive innings, followed by Vishal Chawan (183), Malcoln Suares (179, including a century) and Kevin Singh (156). Bowling honours go to Mike Maclean with 19 wickets, Vikash Gautam (14), Aryaman Apte (13) and Hamish Tucker (12).

The 4th XI, competing in ESCA Division 8, currently lies in 3rd position in the league with 7 victories in 9 completed matches. Duncan Robinson has recently led the side in Ewan Robertson's absence and currently also leads the batting statistics with 323 runs, including three fifties. Other leading run-scorers are Rohan Chowdhary (186), David Evans (146) and Toby Tucker (137). Of the 28 players who have bowled, only Pranjan Patel has reached double figures of wickets, including a 5-wicket return.

In it’s first season, the 5th XI, under the guidance of Michael Ferguson, is proving the decision to enter into the ESCA Sunday League was well founded. Although Michael has only recently been able to take to the field following a training injury, those who have filled in for him have seen the side topping the table with 7 victories of the 8 league fixtures played. As a result of this run of success, the new side tops the new league!

Of the 42 players who have represented the side, few have appeared regularly so the results achieved are to be applauded. Leading both batting and bowling numbers is Kyle Waddell with 123 runs and 13 wickets. Kyle, Matt Burgess, Lochlan Morris, Charlotte Nevard and Jamie Tucker have all registered a half-century for the side.

2026 was always likely to prove difficult for the Women’s XI to repeat the league success of 2025, particularly without the runs of Megan McColl now plying her trade in English county cricket. The side currently sits in 4th place in the Women’s Premier League with 2 wins and 2 losses, one of the losses from a concession when unable to put together a side to visit West of Scotland.

The side’s most notable performance to date has been the club record first-wicket partnership of an undefeated 321 between Charlotte Nevard and Lucy Pillinger against Grampian Thistles at Craiglockhart.
