We have learned of the recent death of Jim Cowan on 8th September.
Before joining the Club, Jim played for Edinburgh University and Penicuik. A left-handed bat and right arm off spinner, he decided to join his brothers Alistair and Douglas at Myreside in 1955 and was a regular in the 1st XI until 1970. Having represented Edinburgh, the South of Scotland, the Border League and the East of Scotland and, after a number of successful seasons at Myreside, he was selected for Scotland in 1960 against Ireland. In the following two seasons he gained two further caps, both against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Jim captained the Club in 1957, with his brother Alistair as his vice-captain, and again in 1965. During his playing career at Myreside he featured in 272 games, scoring 4,732 runs (with 28 fifties) at an average of 23.20, accounted for 202 wickets at an average of 15.94 and took 68 catches. In recognition of playing in 149 “cap” games for the Club, he was one of the first recipients of a “Baggy Maroon”.
In addition to his cricketing exploits, Jim was a regular member of the Penicuik Rugby Club 1st XV which he captained from 1953/54 until 1956/57.
He will be much missed and our thoughts are with Alacoque and all family and friends at this sad time.
Jim’s funeral will take place at Mortonhall Crematorium’s Pentland Chapel on Monday 26th September at 1.30pm.
