4th XI Three Week Round Up

with No Comments
The 4ths have had a mixed lot so far. The first game, v Edinburgh CC 3rds, was a game to get out of the system quickly: a nine-wicket defeat after we scored only 42. The following game, v Tranent & Preston Village 3rds, resulted in a good win for us. Both sides found it difficult scoring runs on the artificial wicket at Prestonpans. We were all out for 115, Julian Fontana top-scoring with 25, and the other batters each chipping in. But we then bowled some good lines and took most of the catches that were offered, and bowled the oppo out for 91. Kevin Weavers and Oli Robertson each picked up two wickets for a very few runs.
Our third game was against MDAFS 3rds, our first proper home game of the season. We had a disastrous start: after half an hour’s play we were 21 for 5, the oppo claiming some good catches off some mis-timed shots. Another short game loomed! But Ewan Robertson, accompanied by first Jono Moore and then debutant Toby Tucker, steadied the ship, and with the other late-order batters chipping in we reached 130-9 at tea – something to bowl at thankfully. By drinks in the oppo innings, a score of 60-odd for 5 left both sides in the hunt. But the oppo pulled away after the drinks break, and despite some excellent bowling by Oli Robertson (3-14) and Farhan Khan MDAFS were able to close the game out to win by 3 wickets. A fine catch by Andrew Hogg to dismiss the oppo’s top scorer only briefly delayed the end.
Overall we haven’t scored the runs yet to ease the bowlers’ lot. No batter has scored 50 runs in total yet. But the bowlers have done their best to make up for that. We also like to ensure that we give games to as many players as possible, young and old, and have already fielded 17 different players, ageing between 12 and almost 60!
